Course info
The Advanced Technology Institute (ATI) is an interdisciplinary research institute investigating materials and devices for future electronics and photonics, addressing challenges in renewable energy, healthcare and information technology. The ATI boasts state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, an extensive clean-room complex, and a complement of staff and research workers in excess of 160, including electronic engineers, physicists, material scientists, biologists and chemists. Much of the research is carried out in partnership with industry, as well as national and international collaborations with other academic institutions. Research is strongly supported by the research councils, industry and through our utilisation of the major international experimental facilities. The ATI has spun-out four technology companies in just five years. Research activities are loosely divided into four thematic groupings: Nanoelectronics, Photonics, Ion Beams, and Theory and Advanced Computation, with shared interest in nanotechnology, quantum electronics and biomedical applications. Materials investigated range from conventional semiconductors to organic materials such as light-emitting polymers, with particular activity in carbon-based electronics including carbon nanotubes.
